The #MicroPoetry of the blog began as a creative practice in 2012. Using the confines of twitter’s 140 characters, this discipline has been a generative opportunity to use words to poetically muse. Starting in 2017, brief reflections became another way to explore the use of these verses as part prayer, thought, reflection, challenge or something in-between. I hope these monthly collections offer you space to be, reflect and consider how your own choices might help you and other #ShineOn.
Alone
wind bends
water shapes
fire devours
stone breaks
In trust
vulnerability reveals
questions shared
alone enigmas
together we awaken
Inspired by collective tenacity …
Reflection
I have always marvelled at the ability of the various forces of nature – earth, wind, fire and water – to shape the landscape. I am also struck how that metaphor can be applied to our sense of celebrating individuality over collective connexions. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to explore that metaphor in a way that hopefully offers space for reflection.
In independence’s narrative
we are divorced from one another
Yet in connectivity’s promise
balance of one reflects
the anchor of the Many
Inspired by balance improbable …
Reflection
I sometimes wonder if the many challenges we confront as individuals are part of a larger story that separates us from one another. So often tales of challenge and hurt, doubt and despair seem connected to stories that keep us apart. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to name connectivity as one journey that might help alleviate such isolation …
Control
an illusive Chimera
ever attention feasting
distracting liberation’s intention
With step brave
hands healing held
may we so dispel
Inspired by letting go …
Reflection
Control: it is an ever-present temptation in our world. Whether it’s in our places of work or play, often we structure our lives in such a way that creates an illusion of stability and permanence. These are obviously not bad things, in and of themselves, but there is concern when we habitually invest in maintaining them to such an extent that we lose site of life’s unfolding beyond those boundaries in which we live. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to explore that and the role of helping one another attain liberation.
It may be truth
offered freely to others
but upon one’s own ears
it hollow seems
trite even
yet listen
truly
“You are Beloved”
#SoMayWeBe
Inspired by seeing oneself as Beloved …
Reflection
In the Christian tradition, the idea that we are Beloved is threaded throughout the Sacred Texts of the faith. Saying that and believing that, however, about oneself is difficult indeed. It may be wisdom shared with others, but to internalise it and live the implications with others is much harder. This A Deacon’s Musing attempts to share that wisdom through #MicroPoetry.
Brick by brick
edifices we build
walled from me
from you
So arise dear friends
ever so gently
carefully chip
until tenderly
heart we share
Inspired by one less brick in the wall …
Reflection
One of those quintessential song’s of (my) youth was The Wall by Pink Floyd. I think that image of how we divide one another remains one of the most potent metaphors that helps us appreciate how we treat each other and – in turn – ourselves. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to remove a few of those bricks …
This moment
as was that one
the Sacred hovers
awaiting
anticipating
awakening
For in this Now
whether tears or fears
choice compassion calls
Inspired by hovering anticipation between each ring …
Reflection
Each moment flows so easily into the next that it is easy to become distracted by the preciousness of the Now. This space is sacred and is always inviting us to recognise not the goal or even the place in the journey, but simply right now. What you smell, hear, and sense aspects of the hovering sacred. The mystical or metaphysical might call this the moment of awakening. This A Deacon’s Musing explores that in this #MicroPoetry #Verse.
When have you felt aware of the singularity and immensity of the Now?
Now’s attachment
discordant dissonance distracts
as harmony wholeness hearkens
Slip free
breaking binding bounds
so all shall so flourish
Inspired by boundaries freely slipped …
Reflection
I have always been drawn to the idea of the Now. It is more than time-related and does not necessarily encompass only this very instant. Though in that time-muddied way it also does! This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry is an attempt to explore how the Now can distract us from the larger reality that surrounds us: abundance, potential & flourishing.
’tis an adventure
this coil ever unfolding
from there to here
back once more
whether inward or outward
upon what we gaze
reality so reflects
Inspired by direction’s gaze …
Reflection
I have tried to thread two concepts together in this A Deacon’s Musing. One is the life examined, the spiritual and inward journey, which often leads to reflexive action in the world. The other is the idea that where we look is what we will see. That which we want to hear, we shall. I think these two ideas are intimately connected and this #Verse attempts to explore them as in relationship with one another!
Your reflections are most welcome!
