The #MicroPoetry of the blog began as a creative practice in 2012. Using the confines of twitter’s 140 characters, this discipline has been a generative opportunity to use words to poetically muse. Starting in 2017, brief reflections became another way to explore the use of these verses as part prayer, thought, reflection, challenge or something in-between. I hope these monthly collections offer you space to be, reflect and consider how your own choices might help you and other #ShineOn.
Within perfection’s unity
each bears rightness inherent
With intention
connect with nature true
& so reveal
we eternal Essence embrace
Inspired by the power of Pi …
Reflection
I have always liked numbers … and like many who do, or such has been my experience, Pi is a fascinating number. One that has inspired genius and conversations about eternity. In the Christian context, especially the mystical, this can be embraced by the metaphor of Holy Mystery. I was musing about this and this A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry began to take shape. If Pi is infinite and each one of us is one digit in that never-ending string of perfect numbers, what might awaken in us if we took that seriously?
Amidst doubt’s veil
& lulling inadequacy’s shadows
bravely surrender self
freeing binding ties
to discover Light
you were born to share
Inspired by the choice of self-surrender …
Reflection
The idea of “self-surrender” connects with many spiritual practices that echoes in various faith systems. I think the potential of liberation is limited when we become ‘attached’ to ‘things.’ These attachments act to distract us from our ‘true self’ to which self-surrender invites us to journey. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to capture that invitation in this Verse.
What do you think?
Without motive ulterior
may we be compassion
Without subterfuge subtle
may we be mercy
Without ego limiting
may we be confident care
Inspired by what we can do collectively …
Reflection
Often our own stuff gets in the way of fully realising that collectively we are often only limited by our imagination. That thought led me to also realise that together the concerns of justice and care for one another clearly becomes a burden light when “I” becomes “We.” This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to thread the I into We in this #Verse …
How have you experienced the power of being part of a community?
In this moment
cleansing breath drawn
cherished
released
Transcend limits
of discord’s voice
so that as you shine
so shall I
so shall We all
Inspired by the transcending of self …
Reflection
One of the age-old intentions of life – according to mystics and poets – is the journey toward transcendence. That place in which the fragility of the ego is released. It is believed, that in the moment of ‘letting go,’ our interconnexions become more apparent in which all things are bound together. Often the ‘awakening’ begins by seeing that the I-You-We divide is artificial. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to share that possibility in this particular #Verse.
#ShineOn
That which brightly emanates
from the core of our being
brightly shines
as eyes awaken to beauty external
reflecting the sublime within
Inspired by the synergy when beauty within emanates without …
Reflection
“There’s a twinkle in your eye.”
I have always marvelled at people for whom the beauty within is clearly evident in their very being. The way they laugh, perhaps smile, and engage in the world that is grounded in a serenity, even in the midst of life’s unfolding, is humbling. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry #Verse attempts to not only capture that, but hopefully remind us all that committing to finding that groundedness in ourselves is indeed a worthy endeavour upon which to set.
In soundscapes where silence drowns
In vistas that overwhelm serenity
Be Still
Stand Tall
Breath Deeply
Eyes Closed
We are still being One
Inspired by breath’s cleansing course …
Reflection
Our attention is in constant tension with our intention. More specifically, there are so many distractions from what some call the “silent whisper” that connects us to one another that it is easy to feel disconnected from oneself, need alone others. This ‘centring’ A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to capture in a meditative moment/mantra through a #Verse.
Discord sown
objectifies
Fear fermenting
separates
Yet in Harmony’s cadence
we are notes’ scaling
each reverberating
Universe’s chorus
Inspired by the resilience that music inspires …
Reflection
That we are living in a time and story of fear – sadly – seems self-evident. How we choose to respond to that, however, remains the single most powerful way to resist the trajectory to binaries such ‘us’ and ‘them.’ Music often seems to be one of those universal and historic ways such resistance has often been lived out. This A Deacon’s Musing #Verse, therefore, attempts to capture harmony’s promise in #MicroPoetry
On this day of potential
three gifts
upon which reflective pause
invites awakening
Present become
Actions’ intention
Habits’ impulse
aware
Inspired by the potential in three …
Reflection
The colour of the glass bottles often strikes me as both playful and complementary. The way the shapes seemed to merge and support one another also caught my attention. That got me to musing about how three coloured bottles might speak to the spiritual journey in three ways:
i) being present;
ii) being aware of our intentions; &
iii) the way our habits sometimes end up distracting our awareness.
This A Deacon’s Musing, therefore, attempts to capture that musing in this #MicroPoetry #Verse …
Your reflections are most welcome!
