The #MicroPoetry of the blog began as a creative practice in 2012. Using the confines of twitter’s 140 characters, this discipline has been a generative opportunity to use words to poetically muse. Starting in 2017, brief reflections became another way to explore the use of these verses as part prayer, thought, reflection, challenge or something in-between. I hope these monthly collections offer you space to be, reflect and consider how your own choices might help you and other #ShineOn.
Through a mirror
we may see reality refracted
A magnifying oculus
we may see clarity crystallised
Perspective embraced
reveals reality perceived
Inspired by Light’s ability to reveal a myriad of meaning …
Reflection
In this echo chamber world in which we live it is easy to lose sight of our inherent, both individual and shared, ability to create new meaning in the midst of challenge. This ability requires us to recognise that our initial perspective(s) is formed by habit. Yet with a commitment to a reflexive practice, we can first reflect and then act to change a response that might not nurture our own or collective well-being.
As you consider the day that has been, choices made, which upon reflection, what might we want to change?
In challenge’s midst
resources small & options few
Unfurl imagination’s mast
excite creativity’s fervour
thus generate opportunities unimagined
Inspired by thoughts unlimited in trying circumstances …

“Not enough”
Too many headlines reinforce a sense that we have no way to act in a world that is declared in crisis, where there are not enough resources, and challenges abound. In this incessant narrative, it is easy to slip into apathy and cynicism. Yet this is not our story.
We are generative and creative dreamers. We have in our own lives, and collectively, found ways to navigate what once was considered insurmountable or unachievable. The limits, ultimately, before us often begin by what we believe we can or cannot do. When we shift our view to engage imaginatively, what was once a closed door, often reveals options unlikely to be named in the narrative of not enough.
We each energy emanate
In waves dancing
particles swirling
into the shadows we gather
bearing Beacon’s beam
to liberate Lost darkly tendril tied
Inspired by dissipating the dark by sharing Light we each bear …
Reflection
The image of a solitary candle gliding through a dark and cavernous room has always held my imagination. The sole flickering beacon offers illumination.
Whether literal or figurative, that flame often promises Hope. And, sometimes, that flicker requires us to make a choice to bear it when others are in need of such illumination which we alone, with the blessing we are, can provide.
In space’s deep depth we coalesce
into this being bounded Now
We journey the Other seeking
One who completes our Moment
together awe aware awaken
For Shelly …
Inspired by journeying with a lifelong companion …
Reflection
This can be a difficult life. It is fraught with doubt, hurt, loss, and moments when we flounder. It can be easy to forget we are Beloved. It can be easy to slip into melancholy, despair, even cynicism.
Yet we are not meant to be alone. We are not meant to journey without companions.
In life’s unfolding there are those who come into our lives who, in the midst of struggle, remind of us of the divine beauty we are. In life’s unfolding, we come into the lives of others whom we offer splendour and joy when anguish threatens.
Vision’s journey
takes us through past’s reflection
so to plait together today
what will future fruition ferry
What shall we pack?
Leave behind?
Inspired by what we choose to pack and that which we do not …
Reflection
You are about to leave on a trip for which you have been planning and longing for some time. It is fair to say that the journey is much more than a tourist outing or a bucket list experience. This one may be about the promise of transformation, an experience of integration, an event that nurtures unfolding awakening, and possibly a combination of all three.
As you look at the suitcase, what should be in there and what should we leave behind?
Beneath our shared Sol
we different horizon spy
Whether rising with rose-filigree
or setting on wonder’s day
Our choices commitment’s testament
Inspired by sharing the same sky with different perspectives …
Reflection
When I look into the sky, during the fall migration of various feathered companions, I am again reminded of the diversity that is Creation. Some squawk, others quack, and some screech. All of these feathered friends share the same sky in a way that feels like a helpful metaphor for our own species.
Different perspectives and ideas are necessary for us to thrive. It is indeed a blessing when we share them in a way that helps us dream about things that, on our own, we would never be imagined.
Life’s resilience inspires
to do more in challenge’s midst
As we journey toward vista
persistence’s wisdom
reveals when we must start once more
Inspired by beginning again …
Reflection
I am drawn to the idea that every day, after we awaken, is an opportunity to start again. Whether that’s around innovating, a spiritual practice, or engaging in conversations that are both inspiring and challenging, we begin anew when we so choose.
When and what we choose, therefore, becomes an invitation to start something new.
What will you choose?
That which we value
Those things in which we energy invest
The moments that draw our attention
Ultimately
what we love
reveals to us what we are
Inspired by appreciating that what we nurture shapes who we are …
Reflection
What do you love?
A simple question, perhaps. Yet if we pause to first explore and understand what we mean by ‘love’ the question takes on significant import for our lives and, just as importantly, with how it affects our choices. If, by love, we mean those things that reflect our core values of care and compassion, and not simply choosing a heart in a social media feed, then what does that mean as we look out onto this day?
What does this mean for the choices we will make for ourselves and Creation?
Your reflections are most welcome!
