The #MicroPoetry of the blog began as a creative practice in 2012. Using the confines of twitter’s 140 characters, this discipline has been a generative opportunity to use words to poetically muse. Starting in 2017, brief reflections became another way to explore the use of these verses as part prayer, thought, reflection, challenge or something in-between. I hope these monthly collections offer you space to be, reflect and consider how your own choices might help you and other #ShineOn.
In consuming’s distraction
& acquisition’s lull
Appreciation beckons
possessions define us not
It is our intention
that which we are
reveals
Inspired by recognising how appreciation’s embrace reveals who we are …
Reflection
I have and do find the work of intention very important. Without the inner work or spiritual practice to unearth why we do something, we become beholden to patterns that limit us. I think this is only further exacerbated by living in a culture that often encourages us to be defined by what we buy and what we have. This A Deacon’s Musing, therefore, attempts to navigate that tension with a hope that appreciation might be a balance …
We are Light
each a spark Divine
that contains promise
illumines hope
care unconditional
When ego released
unfettered compassion
we become
Inspired by Light’s guidance …
Reflection
When you close your eyes …
When you listen to the silence …
When you awaken to who you …
we …
are …
I love the metaphor of imagining that each of us is composed of stardust. That metaphor helps imaging that this is one way in which the Universe is alive. If so, what might it mean if we are children of Light?
This A Deacon’s Musing attempts to explore that in #140Characters …
What do you think?
Dreaming dreams
when hands intertwine
voices in harmony sing
feet in solidarity dance
That which is
pauses
promising to become
what will be
Inspired by the pause between what is and what will be …
Reflection
Often dreams are shared as an individual pursuit. I would suggest dreaming is an artful act that, when done collectively, reveals that the only limitation is our shared imagination. When we begin to dream dreams, I have experienced that truly remarkable things change what is into something stunning. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to capture that with the imagery of movement, dance and song.
When have you shared dreams with others that changed what is into something inspiring?
Like a wave
it pervades all that is
Like a spark
it illumines even the darkest sojourn
Like air ubiquitous
unconditionally embraces all
Love
Inspired by light’s various states of being …
Reflection
Light is a funny thing. It exists and displays multiple physical properties that seem to be a paradox. Yet that paradox seems to be constant and perpetual. As such, I like to imagine it as an unconditional promise. If this central aspect of the physical world models this, then what might that mean about love? This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry plays with light and love as dancing synonymously.
Fear bulwark stands
Hurt’s harm insidious weaves
Vulnerability’s strength paradox
In letting go pain fright woven
forgiveness bloom portends
Inspired by forgiveness’ liberation …
Reflection
Forgiveness too often is watered down or even used to re-victimise those who have been harmed. What if, it was less about the perpetrator who has caused harm, but those who have been hurt finding ways to heal and model resilience’s wisdom? This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry tries to gently navigate that possibility.
The life we lead
unfolds through choices made
That which we sow
grows in soil we nurture
In decision’s pause
may Love ever potential whisper
Inspired by celebrating being a change agent …
Reflection
I like the image of choices being akin to seeds sown in the soil we turn. There is something, for me, that allows for a recognition that choices are tangible and embodied reality. Ultimately, it acknowledges that our choices have consequences when we take them seriously. In that metaphor, I was also drawn to the idea that love always whispers when a choice, whether seemingly small or big, is made. This A Deacon’s Musing attempts to draw that together in this #MicroPoetry #Verse.
No incantation
nor technology
will match
equal
replace
the Light within us
It is when we imagine
that the power to change our world
begins
Inspired by claiming the power within …
Reflection
What lies within you? From where do you draw your resolve to not just strive, but thrive? When does hope embolden you to do more than you thought you initially could?
This ADM #MicroPoetry #Verse endeavours to remind us that we are more than enough and possess the potential to do what we imagine, regardless of spells woven or technology employed.
As wisdom vision births
fear fretting fades
As deep listening insight reveals
divisions arbitrary fade
When us begets we
awakening dawns
Inspired by the gift of a story …
Reflection
Today’s A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry is born from a story a friend shared during a conversation they had while dumpster diving. In that story, a new friend commented on the gift that was shared when someone observed that generosity reveals not us and them, but us and we. This #Verse attempts to honour that story …
Unto the hereafter
sometimes too much
do we pine
Whatever may be
as light’s particle wave becomes
What now we do
lives on in those we touch
Inspired by imagining the hereafter …
Reflection
I completely appreciate imagining what lies beyond this “mortal coil.” I also think that – sometimes – the hereafter becomes a distraction about what we do in our living. It can obscure the good to which we might contribute and the harm that we might be causing. I suspect that a balance is required and this A Deacon’s Musing #MicoPoetry engages in exploring that tension in this #Verse.
In this moment
whether frantic or calm
breathe deeply
holding that blessed gift
feel yourself grounded
to the vibrant pulse
that is Creation
Inspired by the heart pulses within the earth …
Reflection
I have always appreciated the power of a guided mediation that brings me closer to myself and – in that place of paradox – more aware of the larger Whole. This A Deacon’s Musing #MicroPoetry attempts to create a poetic invitation to experience that sense of grounded that can occur in such a practice.
Your reflections are most welcome!
